They walked along in silence as they left the village holding hands. The crickets chirped loudly competing with the sounds of waves crashing along the cliffs. An owl flew across the road in front of them as Odette led him towards a little clearing that they had found along the deer path.
“In here,” she pushed through the brush and came out into the clearing. “No one will bother us here.”
The clearing was lit up by the moonlight and she led him to a downed tree. She paused, trying to think of the best place for him to be when she told him. Motioning towards the tree, she said, “Please, sit down.”
He sat down and was watching her pace back and forth. He spoke up, “Odette, just tell me. It really can’t be as bad as you’re making it seem.”
You have no idea, she thought. It’s probably worse than you’ve been imagining. Finally she stopped pacing and stood in front of him. “I’m really not sure the best way to tell you and I don’t think there’s any way I can say it that will ease you into the idea.” She paused again, wringing her hands. Looking around, anywhere but Eric, she saw Alexander, Bruce, and Charles all stand up just inside the tree line behind him. All of them had taken their harnesses off and their wings were out.
Taking a deep breath, she began, “I know you are wondering about my family and where I come from.”
He spoke up, “Yes, I am but there’s something else I haven’t quite known how to ask you. I don’t want to offend you,” he rubbed his hands on his pants, “but when we were kissing in the market I had my arm around you. Your back,” he paused looking for the right word, “it felt odd. Is this about a birth defect or was there an accident?”
She started to answer him and he cut her off again, “If it is something physical that you’re afraid to tell me because you think it will change how I feel about you, I can promise you that it won’t. I’ve really enjoyed my time with you and I think that you’re beautiful. Nothing will change my mind about that.”
She held up her hands to stop him, shaking her head, “It’s not like that.” She thought for a second and said, “This will probably be easier if I show you. Close your eyes and don’t peek. Don’t open your eyes until I tell you to.”
“Okay.” He bent his head and closed his eyes.
“Don’t look.” She reached back and started unbuckling the harness as she spoke, “I was really surprised when you came up to me at the archery competition. I know Alexander has explained to you that I’m here looking for a husband and I’m assuming that if you weren’t looking for a wife that you probably wouldn’t have introduced me to your family. Am I correct?”
A slight hesitation and then he answered, “Yes.”
“So when I heard
